Collagen is an ingredient often used in anti wrinkle creams but is it effective for aging skin?

Collagen is a protein in our body that gives the skin strength, firmness, and elasticity. As we age the collagen in our skin breaks down. This degradation results in a loss of tone and firmness of the skin. The result is sagging skin and wrinkles.

Eager to remedy this there are a number of anti aging products on the market that have been infused with collagen. These collage creams are designed to be absorbed into the skin, replace loss collagen. This would give a boost to sagging skin and promote wrinkle reduction. But though it sounds good in principle collagen cream does not work well as an anti aging product. The molecules are to large to penetrate the skin. Instead they sit on the skin surface and are washed away in the shower or through natural perspiration instead of firming the skin and helping with wrinkle reduction. Some cosmetic companies are working on another generation of collagen cream. They are attempting to reduce the size of the molecules. However, there is no proof that these smaller molecules in collagen cream are able to integrate with the skin’s collagen. The future may hold promise for collagen cream as new advancements are developed in the anti aging product market but for now collagen creams are unlikely to give the results of younger looking skin.
